CycleHealth Talk by Dr. Solyntjes

Dr. Solyntjes spoke to kids at a CycleHealth event in April 2016 about making exercise a priority and congratulating the kids that completed the 2,016 Sweat Rx Contest.

Here is a portion of her speech (it's a bit of a long read but so worth it. Soak it in. It's an important message):

"I became involved in CycleHealth from the very beginning of things-that first triathlon 2 years ago. Since then, I have helped this group in many ways; from strapping on snow shoes, to going to meetings, to helping racers navigate the course and prescribing the Sweat Rx to patients. My favorite job to date was probably handing out food after the first triathlon. I got to see all the kids when they finished the race. I could see exhaustion, sweat, and fatigue, but more importantly, I saw PRIDE. It was this pride that each individual child had, that made me come back and help more and more. I want to congratulate you for exercising and making health a priority.

Only 1 in 3 children are physically active every day. What are they doing instead? Screens, lots of screens. Children and teens spend more than 7 hours PER DAY using: TVs, computers, phones and other electronic devices. This is not good for their bodies. To combat this, you all have taken giant leaps. Even with you just moving and having fun, there are a lot of benefits that you are giving your body RIGHT NOW!

Exercise is not just for those “athletic” kids who are really good at running or at throwing a baseball. There are many different activities out there for every kid. Let the children choose something enjoyable and once they find it, parents, encourage them to make it a regular part of their life. Exercise is not only about the physical benefits, there are also a lot of mental benefits. I already mentioned PRIDE, which is huge for a young child, but they can also learn teamwork, sportsmanship and it can boost their self esteem.

Keep going out and staying active. Have fun and keep exercising. Feel stronger, feel PROUD. You did this!"

Very inspiring, Dr. Solyntjes! Thank you!
